India's HIV/AIDS Epidemic -- A Global Issue
HIV/AIDS epidemics are usually closely associated with Africa, as the worldwide media is most focused on that beleaguered area of the world. There is a country, however, that is poised on the brink of an HIV/AIDS epidemic that could decimate the coming generation. India is the world’s largest democracy and second only to China in total population, coming in at approximately 1.1 billion. India has yet another distinction, though not one that they want. India has the highest number of HIV/AIDS cases in the world, with 5.7 million cases being reported in 2006, surpassing South Africa's 5.5 million cases. With approximately 38 million cases of HIV/AIDS reported worldwide, India is home to roughly 12% of the world's HIV/AIDS population. And the numbers are rising. According to the Henry J. Kaiser Foundation, India “may be facing the world’s largest HIV/AIDS epidemic, at least in raw numbers.” Indeed, it has been projected that 20-25 million people could be infected with HIV/AIDS by 2010 in India alone. That estimate, however, could prove to be conservative. According to Greg Duke, Director General of the BBC, “The continued spread of HIV/AIDS in India, could, if not curbed, lead to as many as 50 million cases – almost equivalent to the population of the United Kingdom.” Should such a possibility occur, the results would be disastrous on a global scale ![]() Fighting the Tide ![]() The situation in India is not hopeless, but action must be taken soon. In their news piece "AIDS Out of Control in India", CBS reports that "experts say India is close to the tipping point”, indicating that the situation in India has not yet reached a point of diminishing the country’s military strength or weakening the state. However, once that point has been reached, “the virus will have spread too far to be contained.” ASHA – Action, Service & Hope for AIDS – was founded in 1998 by Dr. Glory Alexander in Bangalore, India and is a faith-based organization dedicated to fighting the tide of HIV/AIDS in India. | Return Home | ASHA | Global Impact of HIV/AIDS in India | HIV/AIDS in India Facts | How Can I Help? | Great Links | Contacts | Guestbook | |
